Manchester United FC, the 20-time English league champions, will wear a third kit made from recycled plastic found close to the ocean for the 2018/19 season.

The club’s kit supplier, Adidas, has worked with ocean protection organisation Parley Ocean Plastic to create the navy blue jersey.

It will be made from upcycled plastic waste intercepted from shorelines, beaches and coastal communities.

“We all need to change the way we think and act towards our oceans,” said Oliver Nicklisch, category product director for the German sportswear giant. “It is this core belief we all share at Adidas, which is the reason why our partnership with Parley is so important to us.”

Nicklisch added that he hoped the kit would “highlight the issue of plastic damaging our oceans” and “encourage and inspire football fans” to consider their environmental impacts.

Adidas and Parley Ocean Plastic have previously collaborated on kits for 12-time European Cup winners Real Madrid, and German super-club Bayern Munich.
