Recognition for passively designed Abu Dhabi sports hub

HOK and Pascall+Watson project will be constructed by late-2019

An 18,000-capacity sport and entertainment venue in Abu Dhabi has been recognised by the World Green Building Council for its sustainable design.

The Yas Arena, designed by sports architect HOK, was named as the Sustainable Building of the Year at the MENA Green Building Awards, the ceremony organised by the Council to acknowledge good architectural and construction work being done in the Middle East.

Passive design – in which buildings use climate to maintain comfortable temperatures, lowering energy consumption – is a major part of the project. Shading features, daylighting and reduction of U-values (which improves insulation) will contribute to this process.

The arena, which is currently under construction, was also recognised for its user experience. Depending on the event, the capacity could be 500 or 18,000. The flexible design will allow the venue to host sport, concerts, meetings, conventions and community gatherings.

UK and Abu Dhabi-based architecture studio Pascall+Watson is working with HOK on the project, which should be complete by late-2019.
