Sport’s impact on UN Sustainable Development Goals to be explored

Executives from the world of sport and sustainability and corporate social responsibility to talk at the International Sports Convention in Geneva this December

Ways in which sport can contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals will be explored during a conference in Geneva, Switzerland in December.

The Sport and Sustainable Development Goals Conference will be one of many sports conferences taking place at the International Sports Convention (ISC) on 5 and 6 December.

Occurring on the first day of the convention, the conference will include speakers such as UEFA’s head of football and social responsibility, Patrick Gasser, and UNICEF’s global sport specialist, Alexander Lee.

Philipp Müller-Wirth, who is UNESCO’s executive officer for sport and youth section, will take delegates through the Kazan Treaty and the Sustainable Development Goals – and what sport can do to support them.

The UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals include: no poverty; zero hunger; good health and wellbeing; quality education; gender equality; clean water and sanitation; affordable and clean energy; decent work and economic growth; industry, innovation and infrastructure; reduced inequalities; sustainable cities and communities; responsible consumption and production; climate action; life below water; life on land; peace, justice and strong institutions; and partnerships for the goals.

Nico Briskorn, corporate social responsibility chief for German Bundesliga club VFL Wolfsburg, and Commonwealth Secretariat head of sport for development and peace youth division, Oliver Dudfield, will also give keynote speeches during the conference.

In addition, there will be two panel sessions discussing sport’s role in attaining the UN’s ambitious targets.
