FEI updating Sustainability Handbook in line with GRI Standards

Event organisers will be able to better implement and measure the impact of sustainability initiatives following the adoption of the standards, says governing body

The International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) is updating its Sustainability Handbook in line with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards – the most widely-adopted global standards for sustainability reporting.

After making the decision to adopt GRI earlier this year, the FEI started to adapt to each of the GRI indicators to fit with operations in equestrian sport.

GRI’s standards are split into two groups: Universal (which relate to general disclosures of sustainable practice and the approach of management) and Topic-specific (such as economic, environmental and social).

According to the FEI, adoption of the GRI will “allow equestrian event organisers across the globe to effectively implement and measure the impact of their sustainability initiatives.”

Originally published in 2014, the 36-page guide was developed to help and encourage event organisers to reduce the environmental impacts of competitions by implementing a number of sustainability initiatives.

The document provides practical steps for organisers wanting to develop their own sustainability plans, and a best practice checklist related to eight main areas (see below).

As well as adopting the standards, the FEI has decided to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of its Lausanne headquarters by taking part in a ‘Green Office’ project. Following an external audit, the governing body is working to eliminate disposable cutlery and cups, improve recycling efforts, and avoiding certain types of waste by eliminating their sources.
